The Izu Peninsula and Shimoda area have many summer fun venues to visit. Either by car or train from Tokyo is around a little over 3 hours. During the peak season, we would not suggest a car as it might take a good 5-7 hours. Train, you can take the Odorigo or the Izukyu Express Liner.
Not only are there white sand beaches, great for surfers, divers and many who would like to try their hand at golfing at one of the best golf courses at Kawana.
Kawana not only prizes in their golf course but the fabulous hotel on the premises with its old English architecture.
There are many summer rental homes near and along the coast line, in the Shimoda area. A great time to spend the summer months if staying in the Tokyo area.
The cactus park ( Saboten Koen ) is fun for the entire family.
For Scuba divers, try the Izu Oceanic Park ( Izu Kaiyo Koen ) since its opening in 1964 has been a favorite for many divers, with its huge variety of marine life. Go on a ferry to nearby Miyake Island and enjoy diving with the wild dolphins. There are 8 major islands within the chain of islands off of the Izu Peninsula.
Atami, spending your time at a Japanese style ryokan and taking some onsen
( hot spring bath ), eating the wonderful seafood dishes they offer at restaurants and hotels. Atami is also well known for their firework display.
Enjoy the summer days and nights on the Izu Peninsula.
